• OptinMonster is a paid service with a good reputation. Unfortunately, that reputation is ill-represented. OptinMonster has failed to keep up with the competition. The plugin is terrible and full of bugs.

I requested a refund but was refused.

This is honestly the worst purchase I’ve made all year. I cannot at all recommend OptinMonster. STAY AWAY! There are tons of better services that are actually worth the money.

@summatix – That is surprising, their refund policy is pretty clear, they refund first ask questions later. Did you wait to long? I have talked to users that got prompt refunds without question so it seems there may be more going on here than you have posted?

PS I am a competitor, but I know they don’t generally treat people like that.

Like most negative online reviews, there is always more to the story then what is shared.

My name is Syed Balkhi, and I’m the co-founder of OptinMonster. As Daniel, our friend and competitor, stated we have a very clear 14 days no questions asked refund policy, and we simply believe in making an honest living.

The reason why we offer a 14 day refund policy is because it is enough time for you to try and implement OptinMonster and see the subscriber growth first-hand. In some cases where a user has difficulties getting started, we even extend our policy on case by case basis.

In this case, Robert requested a refund after using the product for 3 months and creating more than 28 optins while adding email subscribers to his list.

Even after writing this review and calling our product “terrible and full of bugs”, OptinMonster is still being used on his website, and he’s still adding new subscribers to his list.

I would post screenshots of user dashboard / analytics, but again that’s not what we stand for.

Our refund policy is very straight forward, and I’ve written about it in details – it was even syndicated on popular sites like Chicago Tribune, FoxBusiness, etc.

I’m Thomas, the other co-founder of OptinMonster. Robert also even went so far as to email me personally to complain, in which I tried to accommodate his responses by trying to address his issues and help him get sorted.

In no way does moving our API script to an externally hosted platform negate the use of our JavaScript Events API. In fact, moving it to the same system as our non-WordPress counterpart allows for WP folks to get API updates immediately instead of having to wait for another plugin release.

Robert consistently used OptinMonster for months without requesting any refunds, and we responded to any tickets. I don’t know what had caused this backlash, but it is definitely not representative of how we do things at OptinMonster.

Like most companies trying to save face, there are always company representatives using PR to downplay any negativity.

You know exactly why the backlash occurred, so don’t play dumb. I have no idea why Thomas keeps bringing up the “JavaScript Events API.”

Recently, OptinMonster decided to drastically change the design of their software. As is clear from Thomas’ comment, they continue to downplay its significance despite telling me in a personal email that it changes the logistics of the company. It’s definitely not a trivial change! This switch has severely impacted my use of the plugin and introduced a host of new of problems. Furthermore, Syed has confirmed that in December OptinMonster’s design will completely change yet again.

The product I purchased no longer exists, yet I’m still expected to pay for it.

Of course I still use it, as Syed inappropriately pointed out with his screenshot. My choice is either to use OptinMonster or accept a financial loss. Even if I stop using the plugin I still would not receive a refund, so Syed comment’s is completely irrelevant.

OptinMonster is not worth the money. I cannot put any trust in a company that pivots its business without any notice to its customers. There are better products on the market. You can increase subscribers using any service of this nature. But I would highly recommend focusing on another service, not OptinMonster.

OptinMonster went through a major change in April when we switched from just a WordPress plugin into a complete SaaS application allowing everyone on the web to use OptinMonster.

    https://optinmonster.com/announcing-optinmonster-app-the-biggest-update-to-optinmonster-since-the-launch-of-optinmonster-itself/

This happened in May and your purchase was made in July. So you didn’t experience any major change.

Since then, there has been no design changes to OptinMonster App UI and the interface. Yes, we’ve added new optin types such as full screen welcome gates, but the way you create, manage, and add optins didn’t change.

The only thing we changed in the recent update when we first heard from you was to serve the script from our servers rather than inside a plugin which was a necessary measure to allow us to bypass the AdBlockPlus block so all users on your site sees the optin forms.

AdBlockPlus extension recently blocked all popular popup services including OptinMonster, SumoMe, WPMUDev Popups, BounceExchange, Picreel, etc etc etc.

We acted promptly and pushed out a fix within 5 business days. We had two options: either serve the script from our servers or leave all the WP users optins being blocked by AdBlockPlus script. The choice was a no-brainer.

The reason why Thomas is bringing up the Events API is because that was the only thing that changed and your concerns were that you would no longer be able to extend OptinMonster. And that’s not true. The Events API is there for you to be able to extend OptinMonster.

There’s several guides on our site that shows how:

    https://optinmonster.com/categories/docs/extending/

Now if you extend improperly (i.e replace our script with a duplicate to add your changes), then that’s not best practice and we simply cannot account for that.

As for referencing to the change that I told you about in the email, it’s a planned UI update that will offer true drag-drop functionality to create optins // add if-then conditionals for targeting // and other highly useful features that will make OptinMonster even more powerful than it is.

OptinMonster is a leading conversion optimization software, and we can only stay that way if we continue to innovate. You cannot fault us on one hand saying we do not keep up with competition and on the other hand complain about the updates which are made to improve the overall user experience and conversions.

    Thread Starter summatix

    (@summatix)

You don’t correctly understand my concern. You’re just throwing around strawman arguments.

I can fault you for your shady business practices and poor customer service. You can still innovate without breaking your customer’s websites.

The fact remains, OptinMonster used to be leading conversion optimization software, but is no more. There are better services available, and potential customers should be made aware of the pitfalls of OptinMonster.

I certainly cannot rate my experience with OptinMonster more than 1 star. I wish I could just be rebated and be done with it. Belittling your customers’ concerns doesn’t do you any favors.

    Plugin Author Syed Balkhi

    (@smub)

If you override plugin core files (not just ours but any plugins or even WordPress itself) then the update will override your changes. This not a strawman argument it’s a fact.

That’s why plugins / services offer APIs that you can utilize to extend the functionality which is best practice.

I’m definitely trying my best to understand your concerns, but so far you have failed to address those except for saying “things changed” which I addressed above. If your concern is that you want a refund after 3 months of using the software and gaining subscribers, then I’m sorry that’s something I cannot offer.

We never belittle any of our customers and always treat them with respect. However an accusation of “shady business practices” is something we take very seriously because that’s not how we operate.

If you have legitimate issues / bugs that you find, then please report them to our support team and we’ll be happy to help.

However if you do not follow best practices of extending plugins using APIs / Filters
(vs. just overriding files), then there is nothing myself or any other plugin author can do to prevent your site from breaking when you update.

It seems like this is not the first time you’ve ran into this issue.

Having that said, you’re definitely entitled to your opinion, and I’m sorry that you feel that way.

    Thread Starter summatix

    (@summatix)

I’ve reported many bugs to the support team, and nothing ever gets implemented. This is the most interaction I’ve received from OptinMonster the whole time I’ve been using it.

You’re not sorry. If you were sorry you’d try to rectify the problem. You can call it an “opinion.” I’ll just call it bad customer service.

I have not changed any core files for the OptinMonster plugin, so nice try there.

Ya know, I’m a fan of OptinMonster and love the new SaaS direction they’ve gone. However, I too; have experienced spotty support. In fact, it was me who discovered a rather big bug that still is not fixed. OptinMonster does not support ‘groups’ in MailChimp. So if you are trying to segment your lists (rather than just have one) then many of their themes will not consistently support that segmentation. Despite MailChimps integration.

    Plugin Author Syed Balkhi

    (@smub)

@remery we have supported MailChimp groups since the very early days.

I personally use it on my site WPBeginner. Here’s the screenshot attached:

    View post on imgur.com

We have this functionality for Infusionsoft tags and several other email marketing services.

Notice for MailChimp there’s even an option to automatically add users to groups (or add user input).

Yeah I’m aware of these settings. However it doesn’t render in a sidebar widget. That’s your bug.
