• I am having a problem with terms (tags). I have thousands of terms in wordpress and unfortunately, many are acronyms. I would like to refine these by indicating that certain terms should have white space on either side of the term.

For example, if my term is “word”, I would not like to see “wordpress” or “sword” appear in the search results.

I have tried to add a score before and after terms (ie “_word_”) but this does not seem to help.

Of course, users could add the quote marks around a search term but most do not.

I hope that I have clearly explained the problem. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • In what context? Where are you seeing this issue (and want to change the behavior)?

Many thanks for your reply. This is found in the search results and in auto-tagging.

My thought was to amend the terms themselves. For example, instead of have a term “word”, it could be ” word “, or “_word_” or “-word-“, and that there might be a function wherein the space, score or hyphen could indicate that the four letters are semantically unique and should be matched exactly and would not be matched to “wordpress” or “sword” in search results.

Thus I am curious if any such hook or function might already exist that I don’t know about.

I need to find the source of the function(s) involved in order to answer you question. I still don’t know where to look. Are you in the front end? Is this a tag widget? Is this at wp-admin->Posts->Tags? Or somewhere else in the backend?
