For the longest while every time I was trying to update outdated templates for every new versions that WooCommerce would publish my store would crash. My first solution was to use the backup option that my hosting offers so that I can get my store back up and running. The problem though that I still had outdated templates. What I did was not come to the forum right away. I just kept on trying to understand why every time there is an update with WooCommerce my theme does not update fully with the new published version. As I thought things through by curiosity and logical thinking I decided to update one template at a time and then do a purge of my cache at every one change and then check to see if the store crashed basically the “white death screen” and it mentions “something went wrong… “. Well updating each template one by one I found the template that crashes my store every time. However, before I say more, yes I did shut down all my plugins when the store crashed, never worked, was not the solution to the issue. I deleted plugins that were not useful and that did not work, was not the solution to the issue. Whatever I tried did not work. The only thing that worked was to go into the coding side of things and going through each template one by one. Well, to my discovery the template archive-product.php version version is 8.6.0 crashes my store and I get a “white death screen” etc. When I revert it back to archive-product.php version 3.4.0 my store is back online. I did not go through the coding of the version 8.6.0 to see where a “possible” coding error exists or not but WooCommerce team I leave that to you. I just did not want to do that don’t have time. I hope you will look into what I discovered and do changes if there is an error in the coding or let me know what on my website may trigger a store crash with your new version of archive-product.php. Even though this does not sound like a question I still have a question; can you verify archive-product.php version 8.6.0 and let me know why it causes my website and maybe other websites store crash. It might also be a good idea to check with your theme’s developer for any updates or compatibility notes. Compatibility between WooCommerce, your theme, and other plugins is key for smooth operation.

Just to let you know my theme they do periodically update their theme but seems like WooCommerce does not update with the main theme. I create a child theme of the main theme. It usually does pull from the main theme updates but WooCommerce has been problematic concerning updates. Concerning plugins as I mentioned I have deleted the highly problematic plugins which one of them was causing high usage of disk space with my hosting. In the end the problem is the archive issue whether directly with the theme or my child theme. For the plugins I am at my minimal usage of plugins. So, I am sure that plugins are not the issue.

It might be necessary to manually adjust this template file in your child theme to be compatible with the latest WooCommerce. If you’re comfortable with code, you could compare the outdated theme file with the updated WooCommerce file and adjust as needed.

If that feels like a stretch, reaching out to your theme’s support with your findings is still the best course of action. They might have patched this in an update or could provide some guidance on how to harmonize their theme’s templates with the current WooCommerce version.

Uhmmm I will contact the theme developer about it. I am comfortable with coding just don’t feel like doing work that someone else should have thought of. With all the changes that WooCommerce has been doing any theme developer should keep up with it and do the necessary upgrades to their coding. As for myself until the theme developer does not come up with an update for that particular issue I am going to leave where it is at until I might get impatient and do it myself. For now the website functions well with the old version so I am not too concerned at this point.

You’re absolutely right, theme developers should ideally keep their themes updated in line with WooCommerce changes.

If your website is functional with the current theme and WooCommerce version, it’s fine to continue as is. However, we suggest keeping an eye on any updates from your theme developer.

In case the theme developer does not update their theme, you can check out our default themes like Storefront and Twenty Twenty-Four to see if they can meet your needs. The themes are always updated, and we provide support for them as well.
