• Hi everyone, i am new to wordpress but have been doing some web design for several years. I wanted to try wordpress out but I’m not sure if I want to install a pre-packaged site for my web site. I usually try to design my own. Although it’s not easy for me to come up with a great design myself does anyone have any suggestions on what to try. I have a design in mind. Should I use a template that is closest to it and then try to modify it? How will the wordpress blog code be affected. Is it clearly noted? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would use a pre-made WordPress template and then modify. That way, there’s something to go on. But, if you want to start from scratch, here’s all you need:

Thanks! Is that a link to information about the design and code after you install wordpress? Sorry I am so clueless about this! ??

So it’s ok to use one of the templates someone designed. I never used someone elses design before. Do they want royalties? lol

This is one of the things that is making me leery about WordPress. I’m an experienced designer. I don’t like templates. I don’t like using other people’s layouts and designs. And I don’t like having someones elses rules forced on me as to how my pages display.

From a design and layout standpoint WordPress seems really unfreindly. It seems like there’s multimple files that need editing. Enforced styles. Enforced formatting. Etc.

It’s not just as simple as designing the page, coding the layout and dropping the WordPress code into your design.

    ElKeter,

Sorry you feel that way. I don’t agree with your opinions, but that really doesn’t matter. I’ve never felt any limitations put upon me in terms of what is or is not possible with a site design using WordPress. There are people who have hacked the guts out of WordPress and designed a site to their exact requirements and have only included the WordPress engine, known as The Loop. If WordPress doesn’t meet your expectations, then that’s fine. I wish you luck in finding a personal publishing system that does.

Yes, that’s how it appears at first, and you do have to dig around a little to find out how best to customise things, but most of the hardcoded formatting can be removed by using a different template function and/or altering the parameters; you can also have as many or as few template files as you want.

I find WP as customisable as any other tool out there and quite a bit more customisable than some, but as I say you will need to do some research into the template functions if you want complete control over the formatting.

Everyone has the right to have their opinion and also their own choice of blogging software.

my vote is for wordpress and believe me I have tried / and am trying, other blog tools also.

    Thanks.

I have tried every single blog out there… and I do mean EVERY single one. Sure, there are others that the templates are far more easier to create (Such as design and drop code in via admin panel) however, I have gotten rid of every blog software and free blog site except this one due to the sheer fact that people are extremely helpful here and not at all rude (unlike those at TXP who for some reason just on my first post alone of asking if TXP was easy to customize they said I should just use blooger- why you would drive away potential users is beyond me :/ )

Anyway, so be it that I.. yes I, have to be the one to get off my lazy behind and learn proper CSS and learn some php coding if need be. At least after its all said and done then maybe I will have a decent looking site. Either way, the support here far outweighs those at any of blog site so I am sticking here… even if I have to post and search every question I run into and throw away my social life for a few days so that I can figure out how to make my own design

It seems unfriendly at first but as you learn more about it you begin to see it as a really great starting point. All you have to do is look at all of the wonderful pages created from the basic building blocks provided by WordPress. I’m no designer, no coder, just a saintly protein chemist having fun but I’m enjoying playing with WordPress.
