    OK, time to embarrass myself ??

    Unless this info is hidden somewhere, what is the primary difference between a theme’s template-tags.php and template-functions.php file? It seems that they are synonymous as they both have functions.

    Taking a peek inside TwentyTwenty, only the template-tags.php exists in addition to the functions.php file. Another theme uses just the template-functions file while another doesn’t use any; just the main functions file.

    So the files that come with a theme can be very different. Some themes opt to have related PHP functions put into files, typically for organization. These files are likely functions related to templates, and tags.
