I just wanted to report an experience I had recently and just resolved.

I created a custom post type with the taxonomy “year.” I had my permalinks set to /%postname%/. For some reason, after creating this taxonomy, all of my parent pages were redirecting to the blog page (index.php). I tried disabling plugins one by one. I tried a fresh install of WP. Nothing seemed to work, only the default setting in permalinks. I finally found this thread from someone who had the same issue:

    https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/60705/wordpress-not-respecting-template-hierarchy-fetches-index-php-instead-of-single/60956#60956

So I renamed my taxonomy to “published_year” and it all works. I hope this helps others. It might be good to have something in the documentation of what taxonomy names cause conflicts with WP Core.
