We need to exempt tax from anyone purchasing products from a single province in Canada. We registered our tax account with the province, and they informed us our product is not taxable in that province. All other provinces are still to be taxed.

Is there an easy way to disable/exempt tax for anyone that selects a certain province?

  • Hi @trainfoodsafety,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your query. I understand you need to set up tax exemption for customers from a specific province in Canada, while still applying taxes for other provinces. WooCommerce allows you to configure tax settings quite flexibly, including setting up tax exemptions based on customer location. Here’s a general approach you can take:

    1. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Tax.
    2. You’ll want to create a tax rate for the specific province where the tax exemption applies. You can do this by adding a new row to the tax rates table and filling in the fields accordingly. Make sure to input the correct province code in the ‘State Code’ field.
    3. Set the tax rate for this province to 0%. This effectively creates a tax exemption for customers from this province.

Now, if you have multiple tax rates and need to ensure that only the tax exemption for the specific province is applied, you might need to adjust the priority of your tax rates.

Let us know if there’s anything else we can help you with.

Hello, thanks for your quick reply!

I tried adding a tax rate as seen below. How do I set the priority to override all other existing auto imported tax rates? I tried both 0 and 99, but neither seem to work.

The first line in the screenshot below is the one I added. Thanks!

    Hi @trainfoodsafety,

Thanks for getting back to us. It looks like you’re on the right track. In WooCommerce, the priority determines which tax rates are considered first. A lower number means higher priority. To make your tax exemption for Manitoba (MB) override other rates, you should set its priority to a number lower than any other tax rates for MB. Since your existing tax rates for MB have a priority of 1, setting the priority for your MB Exempt rate to 0 is correct. However, if the exemption isn’t being applied, it could be due to one of the following reasons:

    • The customer’s address details may not be matching the tax rate criteria exactly.
    • There might be another tax rule that’s taking precedence due to specific postcode or city entries.

Ensure that the postcode and city fields for the MB Exempt rate are left blank. This makes the exemption apply to the entire province regardless of the postcode or city. If the issue persists, it might be helpful to temporarily disable other tax rates for MB to see if the exemption is applied. If it works, then re-enable the other rates one by one to identify which one is causing the conflict.

Please give it a try and let us know how it goes.
