• New WordPress installation with a dozen posts. I added new sublevel categories and menu links and now the links that were opening in new pages are no longer doing that. They are not related to the links that I changed to sublevel. It was working before. I checked the database and it is set for _blank in that field.

  • Nothing about adding new categories would change the target=”_blank”.

When you refer to “menu links” do you mean WordPress custom menus? If so there is an “advanced” field that does not by default display with the menu choices that lets you set target=”_blank”.
The field is labeled “link target”. If you don’t see it on the Menu options page when you open a menu item, click the Screen Options button in the upper right corner and check the Link Target box. That adds that option to the Menu item choices.
