Tags or groups for Mailchimp integration?

I use UM with the Mailchimp extension, and we have 3 grades of membership that we have hitherto segregated using WP custom roles. This wasn’t ideal but was all that was available when the site was built. I am going to rebuild the membership function by using tags or groups in MC instead of WP roles. Intuitively, I would go for groups, but MC docs say that’s more for members self-selecting, whereas we are assigning a grade when they join. What experience do others have with either option? What do I need to watch for when integrating with UM? We do our membership database maintenance on our site and MC is used for emails to members. Hence the membership grade needs to show up in UM on the site.
