For some reason my tags aren’t working in the tag cloud.

Each tag works fine if I use a code like this: [mla_gallery tag=media]

However, if I use the [mla_tag_cloud] the tag cloud shows up fine. But when you click on one of the tags and it takes you to the regular tag URL (Example: https://testsite.com/tags/media), instead of showing a list of posts and media from that tag, I get an error message that says the page is “Not Found. Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.”

I’ve tried everything to try to fix it but nothing seems to work. Instead of using tags, I tried using the MLA attachment tags. I changed tag and category setting in the MLA general settings. I tried deleting all the tags and creating new tags with new names. I changed the permalinks back to default, then custom again… nothing worked. I even created a brand new test website and the tags worked fine until I installed Media Library Assistant.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? What are the proper settings in the Media Library Assistant settings to use wordpress tags instead of MLA’s attachment tags? Is there a way to reset everything? Because if I deactivate the plugin, my tag cloud is still messed up.

… Help me, David Lingren. You’re my only hope!…

I regret the issues you’re having with tag clouds and the confusion between the [mla_tag_cloud] shortcode and the WordPress “Tag Cloud” widget. I hope I can help with a better explanation of how each of these works.

When you say “if I deactivate the plugin, my tag cloud is still messed up“, are you referring to the built-in WordPress Tag Cloud Widget? Is there some other way you are using to display a tag cloud without MLA? With MLA inactive, what do you mean by “messed up”?

Some of your questions about the links behind the [mla_tag_cloud] are addressed in this earlier topic:

    Simple Shortcodes

As you’ve seen, the default link from each term goes to the WordPress “archive page” for that term. This is great for tags assigned to posts and pages, but useless for any attachments assigned to the tag; WordPress eliminates attachments from its archive building process. Techniques for composing attachment archive pages are discussed in the above topic.

Building an archive page that includes pages, posts AND attachments is possible, but it is theme-specific and it requires creating a WordPress Template file and writing some PHP code. If that’s worth the effort for you I can give you some help.

The WordPress Tag Cloud Widget may not work well if you use the built-in Tags and Categories taxonomies for attachments as well as posts and pages. You can put an [mla_tag_cloud] shortcode in an MLA Text Widget to get a similar display that works for attachments, but the current MLA version doesn’t handle mixtures of posts, pages and attachments very well either.

The next MLA version, due out shortly, has an enhanced [mla_tag_cloud] that should work for you. It will allow specific combinations of post_type and post_status to be included in the cloud, as discussed in this related topic:

How to display pad_counts for hierarchical taxonomies

I am confident that the enhanced [mla_tag_cloud] and some work on the link destination will get you what you need. I wish it were simpler, but tags and attachments were added to WordPress long ago and some of the code that uses them is quite old.

Thanks for your understanding and your patience.

It has been two weeks since I last heard from you.

I hope my suggestions helped you find a solution to your issue, and I am marking this topic resolved. If you are still having trouble, let me know.

Thanks for your interest in the plugin.
