Tags no ordered alphabetically?

  • I just updated to the latest WP and the updated Hueman version that WP alerted, so I just noticed this.

    In the case of the tags, they should display (and were displaying) alphabetically, but instead of this happening I’m getting this order:

    country: usa, country: france, genre: drama, genre: war, country: uk, david thewlis, marion cotillard, genre: historical, michael fassbender, paddy considine, william shakespeare, year: 2015

    but wouldn’t the correct order render all the “country” tags together, followed by ‘david thewlis’ tag, then genre tags and the rest?

    I’m not sure how WP returns the tag list. I read somewhere that it was based on the number of posts, but I think that was referring to a tag cloud and the size of the tags. I don’t believe the WP function used to return tags has any arguments that can be used to sort the results. However I think it calls the WP get_terms() function which does have several arguments. You might be able to copy single.php to a child theme and replace the_tags() function with get_terms(), using the “orderby” and “order” arguments. I don’t have a site that uses tags so don’t know if that will work or not. As to why they previously appeared alphabetically and now they don’t, not sure why. Maybe a change in the way WP returns the tags in the newest release.
