Sometimes what’s true about tag A is also true about tags B and C. For example, whatever I say about #Gap is also true about #Banana Republic and #Old Navy. Right now I am trying my best to use all 3 tags every time I need to mention any one of these, but it quickly gets out of hand.

What I wish I could do is the following: mention any one of these tags A, B or C, but treat it as if all three are there, so that the post would be included in the list of posts for each of these tags and in the count of posts for each of them that’s retrieved via the corresponding shortcode, yet display only the explicitly mentioned tags on the page.

A sightly different use case is when A, B and C are a part of D, for example, #Gap, #Macys and #Nordstrom are all members of #Clothing Retailers. When I tag something with #Clothing Retailers, I wish to treat that page as if it was tagged with #Gap, #Macys and #Nordstrom too (without displaying them, exactly as described above), yet when it was tagged with #Macys, it should not include #Clothing Retailers tag.

What I am asking for is a relationship between tags that is not currently captured by group hierarchy as far as I understand.

Hi @eugenevv. Thanks for using Tag Groups. We do have this solution in our TaxoPress plugin: https://taxopress.com/docs/synonyms/

Does TaxoPress work in conjunction with Tag Groups?

What are synonyms in your implementation, are they stored as tags? Can they belong to different tag groups?

In the example from your link (if I understand it correctly), if “Golden Delicious” tag is found in the post, TaxoPress will add the tag “Apple” to it, but what happens when I remove the synonym definition? Will the post remain tagged with “Golden Delicious”, “Apple”, or both?

    Hi @eugenevv.

    • The synonyms are not tags. They are used instead of creating new tags.
    • This is only for adding tags, not removing them.

So, it adds tags automatically when it discovers a synonym anywhere in the post content? That’s a neat feature, of course, but it’s the opposite of what I’m looking for.

Maybe best way to describe it would be “tag redirects”: “Golden Delicious” would redirect to “Apple”, without explicitly tagging these posts with #Apple. Creating a new tag “Apple varieties” later and updating the definition of “Golden Delicious” to redirect there instead would automatically have this effect on all posts where the tag was used.

I would like to be able to define tags as equivalent or interchangeable in such a way that when I use any one tag from among the list of interchangeable tags, only that one tag would appear in the post, yet the post would be included in the post list for all equivalent tags, in post count for each of these tags, and so on.

If this was implemented within Tag Groups, I would also like to see a way to distinguish “redirected” tags from regular tags, for example, by showing them in italics within a tag list.

OK, thanks for sharing your ideas, @eugenevv

If you are familiar with redirects in Wikipedia, where both redirects and articles can be categorized, and are listed alphabetically within the category, with redirects appearing in italics – I wish I could accomplish something very similar with tags and “tag redirects” within tag groups.
