“Error: Looks like you’re already using Google Analytics within your Google Tag Manager configurations. However, the configured Analytics tags reference different property IDs, or the setup process was not fully completed. You need to configure the same Analytics property in both containers.”

With previous versions of this error – people are told to look inside tag manager because something is wrong there. Cool. Here is where my tiny brain gets lost – where do I look inside tag manager?

    Hi @mlevison,

Thanks for getting in touch. You have a few options when it comes to ensuring you don’t have multiple Google Analytics properties on your site.

If you’re looking to check the property from with in your Tag Manager account you visit tagmanager.google.com or click on the link within Site Kit that directs you to Tag Manager. From there, open the account and property which you’ve connected in Site Kit. You can then click on the “Tags” tab on the left of the screen to check what tabs you have active. If you remove or change any tags, such as a Universal Analytics tag, you’ll need to publish these changes in order for the changes to become active. You can do this by clicking on “Submit” on the top right of the page, and then publish. You’ll find a more thorough guide below:
    https://support.google.com/tagmanager/answer/6103696

Once you remove your Analytics tag from Tag Manager, you will no longer see the error you described if editing your Analytics module within Site Kit.

Let me know if you have any further questions on this.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I was having so much fun with tag manager that I created a new container to test what is happening. Result I’m more confused.

If the new tag manager contains only tags for Google Ads I may add it to my site with SiteKit. As soon as my tag manager has a single Universal Analytics tag, I get that error.

I checked my Google Analytics variable in Tag Manager (didn’t even know that was a thing). It is correct, it is the same id I’ve had for years. Just to be sure it was correct, I forced it to update and published a “new” version of the tag manager. SiteKit in WordPress still complains.

I quadruple checked the Analytics ID displayed in SiteKit and the ID in Tag Manager are the same.

    So either:

    1. There is another setting I’m missing that matters
    2. Tag Manager containers published on WordPress websites with SiteKit, must not contain Universal Analytics tags?

If it’s the latter? Where do all of my UA tags go?

    Tell me what I’ve missed/

    \- Thanks Mark

Sorry to hear of the further confusion Mark, hopefully I can assist! I also noticed you’re using AMP, so this is likely the cause of the error you’re facing.

If the new tag manager contains only tags for Google Ads I may add it to my site with SiteKit. As soon as my tag manager has a single Universal Analytics tag, I get that error.

Site Kit will display Analytics data within the plugin dashboards based on one connected Google Analytics account. If you’re connecting the Analytics module, it’s normal that the plugin will check for existing Analytics tags, including those placed via Tag Manager. In your case, as you’ll need to select an AMP container also (for your AMP URLs), this makes the process more complicated.

    So either:

    1. There is another setting I’m missing that matters
    2. Tag Manager containers published on WordPress websites with SiteKit, must not contain Universal Analytics tags?

I suspect the setting is your AMP container and a possible Analytics tag within that container.

In order to resolve this, can you remove any Analytics tags from within both your Web container and your AMP container? After doing so revisit your Site Kit settings and connect Tag Manager once more. You won’t see any existing property notices at that stage.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

@jamesosborne It was a good idea, unfortunately the AMP container is empty, no tags, no variables. So honestly it serves no purpose. My previous test makes shows that if my regular – plain container – has no Analytics tags SiteKit is happy. If it has a single Analytics tag SiteKit is unhappy.

I watched your video and I can’t quite see what you’re trying to show me. (I can read code and am happy enough in the Safari/Chrome WebInspector tools). If I understood the original problem correctly, I would get in trouble if I had different instances of the the google universal analytics UID on the same page. From what I can tell they’re the same. Help me understand what I missed.

Thanks for the update @mlevison. In the recording I was checking your AMP URLs, which also checking for any Analytics snippet that is placed on your AMP URLs (via Site Kit, or via the AMP plugin). I could only see a Site Kit placed Analytics snippet.

Using AMP along with using Tag Manager with Analytics tags can result in confusing messages, as the plugin checks for these Analytics tags in both an AMP container. There are also GA4 considerations, you will need to have the same GA4 tag or no GA4 tag within your Web container.

My previous test makes shows that if my regular – plain container – has no Analytics tags SiteKit is happy. If it has a single Analytics tag SiteKit is unhappy.

The problem you’re encountering is the cause of you using AMP along with your connected Analytics tags in the connected container. I recreated this and I made another recording (with notes) based on this error.

To resolve your issue, can you please perform one of the below:

    1. Remove any Analytics tags you have within your Tag Manager container and connect Tag Manager once more within Site Kit.
    2. Ensure that if you have any Analytics tags within the connected Tag Manager account, that they match Analytics properties connected within the Site Kit Analytics module? This includes using a Universal Analytics tag for your AMP container.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you!
