I worked on several table updates this morning (just about all the content is newly added) and when I flipped over to the front end of the site to see how it all looked, I noticed that I had deleted the “Header Row”, so the first event in the list was now showing up with the heading format.

After trying to insert a new row and move it to the top, the table would not save my changes … so I inserted a row at the top of the table and tried to make that the header. Again, the table would not save. Please bear in mind that throughout the morning I was successfully saving all the other rows as they were added to the table.

I tried to reload the page where the table was being edited and then save changes – no better result.

Error message: Saving failed: AJAX call failed – error Not Found. Try again while holding down the shift key.

I tried the suggestion … still no success.

How do I regain the ability to save my work?

Amazing self-healing! I went back and tried saving the table again this morning and all is well again. I would have to say this is both puzzling and a little troubling, but all the same – Tablepress is a wonderful plugin and I hope it continues to work well.

    Hi,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

Great to hear that everything is working again! From that error message — the “Not found” part, in particular — my guess would be that something on the server temporarily prevented requests to the WordPress file that is used for saving data. This could have been a server security firewall, some rate limiting for performance reasons, or even a server hiccup. So, great that everything is working again ??

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

I appreciate you taking the time to reply, Tobias!

Tablepress is a very handy plugin and I am grateful that you wrote it / made it available to the WP community. Because of other similar difficulties on other sites hosted on the same server, I’m thinking you are spot on that there is some kind of issue with firewall or an ajax-related issue. I have two “code snippet” plugins that will not save anything and simply redirect me to a 404 page when I try to update the snippets. Very frustrating.

Thank you for your good work and yes, I will be more than happy to rate this plugin!

    Hi Jeff,

yes, that would be another indicator for a server configuration issue. For example, the server security software could be recognizing the code snippet as code, and might be thinking (wrongly) that some sort of hacking attack is going on. Then, instead of passing the request through to WordPress/the plugin, it’s blocking it by sending that 404.
There might be more information about this in the server’s error log file, which might be helpful for the server admin (or your webhost’s support team) to maybe relax the strictness and configuration of that server software.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias
