Syntax for Redirects

I’d like members of my BuddyPress site, whether they are newly registered users activating their account for the first time OR veterans who log in multiple times a day, to be redirected to the messages section of their profile.
Here is the url for that section –
https://milemarker20.com/members/(members username)/messages/
How do I construct the url such that it dynamically replaces (members username) with the generic tags that represent ANY members username, like [merge codes] in an email provider. Something like,
https://milemarker20.com/members/%%username%%/messages/
Can this be accomplished?
