Syntax for inserting LaTeX only works inside lists

The \( … \) and \[ … \] syntax for inserting LaTeX into a post only work within a list. Outside of a list they just turn into ( … ) and [ … ]. The excessively verbose [latex] ... [/latex] syntax does seem to work outside of lists.
