Synonyms / Hierarchical Tags

I want to create Tag-Synonyms. I thought of making tags hierarchical and adding all the synonyms as children. E.g. add “Aspirin” and “acetylsalicylic acid” as children to “Aspirin”. And in the Auto-Link feature the link goes to the parent-tag-archive and there all posts with one of the child-terms are listed.

Is it possible to do something like this?
