Syncing updated local onto live

  • So I had a client’s site that we successfully built and was operating – but they requested some rather major changes to the site.

    These changes include not only design changes (wp-content) but also changed permalink settings, added pages and all the meanwhile the client has still been blogging on the live site since we took a snapshot of the live site to work on it locally.

    My question is how best to integrate the new changes without losing all the new posts, comments, tags that have been added by the client during this time? Is there a way to export the local/updated database MINUS posts/tags and comments so I don’t save over the update live parts of the database?

    Surely there must be a set system that deals with maintenance and syncing with the live site while these changes are made? Care to share yours?

  • Take a full backup of your blog including contents and MySQL database. You can set Maintenance mode in your blog that lets visitors know your blog is down for maintenance. Visitors will see a message like “Maintenance Mode – SITE is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance.

    Thanks, that’s a great resource but I was actually more asking about the technicalities of updating the site without just doing a complete re-upload and losing the new posts/tags/comments the client had added in the last few days.
