I use this plugin to transfer my development site to production servers and it really works like a charm, great!

Problem arise when I need to just update an existing site: files become quite big and it would be nice to be able to sync/update only changed files – instead of down/uploading the whole package. Is there a solution for that?

  • Hey dsl225,

You can use the import feature built into wordpress for posts, categories ect… As far as files I just use FTP. There isn’t a solution beyond those items that I know of…

You can also create exclusion filters if your wanting to skip large files…

    Cheers~

Hi, thanks a lot for your feedback.

Yes I already use exclusions but this is not really a solution. My idea was to update locally and just upload on server what changed – from time to time.

WinSCP has great options for sync and that would fit WP files alone, but then the database is left aside.

I’m maybe naive, but I thought of an option that compares a DUPLICATOR package with an existing previous one and produces a new fresh package with only changed files – and then offers the ability to append them to an existing installation elsewhere.

But I’m probably asking too much and your plugin already does a lot of excellent job!

    Hey dsl225,

Yeah when you start talking about running differentials on zip files or even SQL files the logic gets pretty complex, this is why companies like Redgate make really good money by charging $1,500 per licence for that kind of complexity.

Also those types of tools are geared towards developers. Even if I was able to pull it off alone, my ticket count would go through the roof, because people would be confused by the process to actually do the merge… I wish it were that easy ??

We may have a DB only option in the future, but we are still working on stability issues right now in this beta version…

I told you this was a naive question…
Absolutely, I understand, no problem, just an idea.

Out of curiosity: which beta version are you talking about?

Pretty much everything before a 1.0 we are considering beta. So the plugin overall is still in Beta as we work through trying to get it to work on a bazillion different hosts…

    Cheers~

Oh, thanks, didn’t ever realize this was a beta.
I have to say that on my installation (hostgator) it works like a charm. Never encountered the slightest issue.

    Best of luck!

Glad its smooth for you! Thanks for the feedback!
