• I am switching my web host and domain registration to GoDaddy. To minimize downtown, is it possible to transfer the website to GoDaddy first, ensure it has transferred properly, *then* transfer the domain registration to GoDaddy? Then the old site (on the old web host) would remain live until I carry out the domain registration. Is this possible?

I have built my new site on a subdomain of the old site. I’m afraid that, since my transfer is a little complicated (site is currently on a sub-domain, and I will be moving it to the top-level domain), that the transfer will take some time to work out the kinks. I’d obviously prefer it if my old site could remain live during that time.

Yes. When you switch Web hosts, your TLD does not need to propagate. You can continue to develop/migrate until you’re ready to deploy. Your new Web host should provide you with an IP and/or alias to serve/upload your files. All this info should be in your welcome email when you sign-up for new Web hosting.

As for subdomains, depending on the package you buy and your WordPress customizations, this may get tricky. I recommend asking your new Web host for support on subdomains–but everything else WordPress-related should be no problem.
