• Hello, I have been struggling with this issue for a while now and was hoping anyone has experienced it before.

When I switch from the Classic Editor to the block-based editor (Gutenberg), it seems to reset the content on all the pages of the website I’m managing. As in, the pages return none of the content that is present in the Classic Editor, neither the written content or the pictures. When I switch back to Classic Editor, however, all goes back to how it was before.

I’ve tried disabling it as well, even switching to other block-based editors (Elementor, Beaver Builder etc.), all of them returned different errors or came with the same issue.

Should pages made with the Classic Editor not return the content if one moves to a block-based editor? Is this website doomed to use Classic Editor forever? Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this and how to fix this? We are no longer in contact with the web developer who worked on the website, and I do IT stuff but am new to WordPress/don’t know coding so this issue has me stumped. Any help is appreciated, I can provide screenshots if necessary. Thank you!

  • Hi @silviu8 it depends on what was used to add content to your site cbwa.co.uk, I was checking your homepage, and the content there suggests that your site might be using another editor.

Are you able to take a screenshot of your homepage in the editor?

Hi @thelmachido , thank you for the quick reply! I could not tell you 100% what was used when the website was first made, but this plugin was the only editor that was installed when I started working on it 6 months ago. If it makes any difference, I can see revisions up to 2 years ago; those, I can say with more surety, have been made using the classic editor.

Hi @silviu8 it looks like the content was added by another page builder, which would explain why it’s disappearing when you move to a block editor. Some page builder plugins work with the classic editor and you can see how content should structured when using the classic editor to add content to your site.

I’m not sure how you can move from the current option to the block editor in this case, I would suggest checking the list of your plugins to see which one removes content from your site when deactivated. Once you know the plugin maybe you can check with the developers how you can move the content.

Hi @thelmachido , sorry, I’m still new to WordPress and learning, how did you find out that the content was added by another page builder? I am asking because the classic editor is the only page builder plugin currently installed on the website. Also, are you saying that another, random plugin might be causing the content to disappear when disabling the classic editor and switching to the block-based editor?

If so, any chance you could nudge me towards an adequate guide/article on the internet that I could follow to get me closer to finding a fix for this issue? Unfortunately we don’t have a web developer anymore with experience in WordPress, and going about turning all plugins off one by one myself based on a hunch makes me just a bit anxious, as it doesn’t sound safe ??

I’m still new to WordPress and learning, how did you find out that the content was added by another page builder?

If you check the screenshot I shared and yours you can see that the content is structured differently. The Classic Editor looks more like a plain editor without much stuff on it, it’s more or less like adding content to a Word Document. Your content is being added using panels, I see a banner, content, and content & image panel, etc that’s why I am saying you have another page builder.

Also, are you saying that another, random plugin might be causing the content to disappear when disabling the classic editor and switching to the block-based editor?

Not quite, depending on how the plugin or this feature you are currently using works – content might be failing to be transferred to the block editor so it would be important to know what is being used exactly. It’s hard to provide you with more information about moving your content to the block editor because your content was added using something different.

One way to check which plugin was used to add content would be to try and deactivate your plugins one by one. Once you deactivate the plugin that added the content there it will disappear, I understand that it might be scary to deactivate plugins on your site.

Install and activate Health Check. It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off, and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site.
