You could use a slider, perhaps, and style it to put the carousel on the side. Look at the various slider and accordion plugins.

I’ve managed to create a carousel, the problem is I can only change the image by clicking on the little dots. Can I change the image by clicking on a button outside the image box by any chance?

Ask in the support area for that plugin — if you want to exactly duplicate the functionality of that other site, you may need to hire a developer.
