• I have a site built with iWeb and hosted externally. I want to move to Dream Host and also integrate the site with WordPress so that I (1) have new hosting and (2) can now build the site with WordPress.

How should I go about doing this?

Should I (1) switch the hosting first (probably to Dream Host) and then (2) download and install wordpress on my domain (www.innocentsurfschool.com)?

Would that work? Would I lose all of my old content?

I would really appreciate some advice because I’m fearful that I’ll lose all of my content and have to start from scratch.

  • Once you change your domain’s name server and point it to the DreamHost name servers your ‘old’ site will not be available at your domain.

Now DreamHost may give you a method to access your account with a temporary domain, then when you are ready switch name servers.

I’m not totally sure I understand. Should these be the order of operations I follow:

    1. register hosting with dreamhost
    2. change DNS settings and point it to dreamhost
    3. install wordpress on dreamhost under my domain

Is that all I need to do? I don’t get the part about a temporary domain.

    1. Backup old site (everything)
    2. Purchase hosting plan with Dreamhost
    3. When you are done with old site, point domain’s name servers to Dreamhost name server
    4. Install WordPress at Dreamhost
    5. Integrate your old site into WordPress
    6. Once happy with new site, discontinue plan with old host (assuming old host in NOT your domain registrar)

i have also built a bog on iweb and have it published through godaddy. i want to switch my blog to wordpress so i’ve already downloaded it. in the above response to searchzombie, i don’t understand #5. i want my readers to be able to see my old blogs but i want the original dates on them as well. please give me easy steps to move my past posts (i guess, one by one copy and paste?) so that it isnt too confusing for my readers.
thank you…i hope you are still out there michaelh. or anybody!
