    Hi,

I disabled W3 Total Cache and attempted to enable Jetpack Boost. I get this error:

    Your site's wp-content folder doesn't allow updates
This feature cannot be enabled because Jetpack Boost cannot create or modify files in wp-content.

Here are the permissions of the wp-content folder:

    -rw-r----- 1 bitnami daemon 4447 May 30 20:29 wp-config.php

Here are the permissions of the contents of that folder:

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 daemon daemon 498 Aug 16 21:40 advanced-cache.php
    drwxrwxr-x 4 daemon daemon 4096 Aug 17 18:22 boost-cache
    drwxr-xr-x 10 daemon daemon 4096 May 31 00:14 cache
    -rw-r--r-- 1 bitnami bitnami 2228 May 30 20:46 db.php
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 bitnami daemon 28 May 20 01:50 index.php
    drwxrwxr-x 3 daemon daemon 4096 May 21 04:20 jetpack-waf
    drwxrwxr-x 2 bitnami daemon 4096 May 20 01:50 languages
    -rw-r--r-- 1 bitnami bitnami 7207 May 30 20:46 object-cache.php
    drwxrwxr-x 12 bitnami daemon 4096 Aug 15 22:31 plugins
    drwxrwxr-x 4 bitnami daemon 4096 Jul 26 20:52 themes
    drwxrwxr-x 2 bitnami daemon 4096 Aug 15 22:31 upgrade
    drwxrwxr-x 3 daemon daemon 4096 Aug 12 19:23 upgrade-temp-backup
    drwxrwxr-x 5 bitnami daemon 4096 May 20 03:11 uploads
    drwxr-xr-x 2 daemon daemon 4096 Aug 15 22:45 w3tc-config

When I change permissions of wp-content from 755 to 775, Jetpack Boost works. But that seems insecure to me. Should I go ahead and do that? Or something else.

    Thanks!

    Dave

    Hi @guildnavigator,

Thanks for reaching out and for providing detailed information about the issue you’re experiencing.

The error you encountered when enabling Jetpack Boost relates to file permissions within the wp-content directory, which are crucial for Jetpack Boost to function correctly. Specifically, Jetpack Boost needs to create and modify files in the wp-content folder, including the boost-cache subdirectory, to handle caching effectively.

While adjusting permissions to 775 can resolve this issue, I understand your concern about security. According to our troubleshooting guidelines, setting directory permissions to 755 or 775 is generally safe and necessary for the plugin to write the necessary files. You can also set file permissions to 644 or 666 to ensure everything works smoothly.

If you still feel unsure, you can try temporarily adjusting the permissions while activating Jetpack Boost and then reverting them once it’s set up. Additionally, make sure there are no conflicting caching plugins active, as they could interfere with Boost’s caching system.

I hope this helps clarify the situation! If you need any more assistance, feel free to reach out.

    Best regards!
