• I migrated from Yahoo-hosted Blogger to WordPress. I kept the Blogger version live on my established directory “blog” and set up the WordPress version on new directory “blog1”.

Now I want to move the WordPress version onto the directory “blog.” I renamed the directory used by the Blogger version so that there’s not currently a “blog” directory.

But when I follow the directions in Moving WordPress Within Your Site, I keep getting stuck.

    1. If you will be moving your WordPress core files to a new directory, create the new directory.

No problem. I create a new directory called “blog”. I login, go to the Administration > Settings > General panel, and then…

    4. In the box for WordPress address (URI): change the address to the new location of your main WordPress core files.
    5. In the box for Blog address (URI): change the address to the new location, which should match the WordPress address (URI).

When I try to change “https://mydomain.info/blog1” to “https://mydomain.info/blog” I get this message:

Warning: Modifying this field will cause your permalinks to malfunction. We strongly recommend that you do not change this field.

Please note that this field should match the web address of your blog installation directory. If you chose to make your blog your home page when you installed WordPress, your blog was automatically configured to display at your domain. You should NOT change the value of this field to match your domain.

If anybody out there has been through this before, can you please tell me how I can get my WordPress blog onto the directory “blog” without breaking my permalinks?

  • I’m thinking — unless this message actually blocks you from ignoring the warning and moving ahead — that it’s ok, and once you move the core files (or just rename your /blog1/ directory to /blog/ ) that all shall be well.

Or, possibly… before you started thinking about this directory rename, did you customize the permalinks settings at all?

    Thanks, Rob.

The message doesn’t keep me from changing WordPress Address or Blog Address.

I do have the Customizable Permalinks plugin activated, and here’s what I used for the customized permalink when I imported from Blogger:

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html

Once I’m publishing from https://mydomain.info/blog, that will match how my permalinks looked when published from Blogger.

So, you’re thinking that if I rename the WordPress directory from /blog1/ to /blog/ and change those WordPress and Blog addresses, I’ll be in good shape?

Well, I’d follow the directions in the original order… first change the settings, then rename the parent directory. I think that ought to work fine. You might just try setting the permalinks setting back to default before you change the WP-address and blog-address settings; that might stop it from complaining at you, then change it back afterwards.

If things go horribly awry, I can probably swing a little phone tech support tomorrow morning ;^p
