You can register the category taxonomy for any post type, including events. However, this plug-in gives special treatment to the event-category, event-tag and event-venue taxonomies in that it will render them on the event page, and allow you to add filters for them on the calendar shortcode and posterboard extension.

It’s not possible to do the latter for the (post) ‘category’ taxonomy.
