Swift theme – posts lacking hyperlinks and text editing

Hello:
At the suggestion of a moderator, I downloaded a WP-approved theme. I thought Swift would be flexible enough for me. But I cannot customize the text nor can I hyperlink anything. Is there a plug-in I need for this? There is a place to add links at the bottom of the post page, but they don’t appear anywhere and I cannot hyperlink them to text. The Swift support forum doesn’t have anything for this.
My ads on the right (along with the archives/categories) can’t be found on any widgets – so I can’t edit them or move them around. I have no idea where they are. Did I get a simple theme, or is there an even more idiot-proof theme that could be suggested? There isn’t a WordPress 3.5 for Dummies on the market yet.
