• Hi. I have a problem with swedish characters ??? when viewed in the Mac default browser Safari. It seems to work fine on pc browsers like IE and also looks fine in Firefox and Camino on the mac, but not in Safari, which I find very annoying. Any suggestions? I have to admit that my knowledge about text encoding is quite slim. But I do know that I have chosen the standard UTF-8 in my settings, if that’s any help.

Example: the swedish character ? looks like ?¤ when viewed in Safari.

    Thanks in advance!

  • whats your charset set to in the backend?

see if setting it to iso-8859-1 helps.

You really should use utf-8. But it seems Safari is not picking that up. Is Safari set to automatically view in another encoding? It should pick up the encoding that WP sends.

It may also be a font problem: does Safari pick up the same fonts as your other browsers?

Setting it to iso-8859-1 made no difference, the problem remained. When I set my Safari to use Unicode, it works fine. But that’s seems like a poor solution, since people who visit to my blog and use Mach OSX/Safari hardly knows that they must do that.

Safari (and Firefox I think) seems to be pre-set to view iso-8859-1, but Firefox (and Camino) handles the site just fine anyway, and so does IE on a pc. It’s just Safari that messes with me.

I don’t think the problem is font-related, I’ve tried with several different now, and it’s set to show only Times and Arial at the moment, which I guess should work fine on whatever platform.

Hi again. Problem solved, sort of. Apparently it was the Statcounter code that I put on the index.php page that made everything go wrong. Strange that it only affected Safari though.
