"Swapping" WordPress Sites

  • Okay, probably a simmple question but I can’t seem to get any adequate answers out of GoDaddy technical support. Here is the situation, I have two sites:

    1) https://www.mysite.com – files located in the root of my hosted Apache server under “httpdocs”
    2) beta.mysite.com – files located in the root of my hosted Apache server under “mysitebeta”

    Aside from the obvious of changing the database to reflect the correct names, GoDaddy is telling me I have to move all the files off to another location from each site and then copy them all back to the appropriate directories (swapped).

    This just seems overly complicated and I just think there has to be an easier solution. Perhaps just editing some configuration files?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated… I’m already 2 weeks behind on this simple little project.

  • GoDaddy are correct. Because you installed WordPress in a sub-domain as opposed to a sub-folder, you will now have to carry out a full site move. See Moving_WordPoress for the details of how to do this.

    How about this… if I were to remove everything (all files and folders) from the target directory and copy everything from the beta site into this empty directory, would the site come up properly?

    I’m not quite sure where the database resides… can’t seem to find it anywhere.

    Technically, the database is above the web root on the server. But for your purposes, there’s a database tab in the GoDaddy hosting section where you can manage it.

    So then my theory will work? Just empty the directory and copy the beta files in and everything should come up, correct?

    I’m assuming it would be a best practice to export the beta database and import it into a new one then point the new site at that one yes?

    Since your domain is changing, it’s not as simple as just coping the files and moving the database. There are references to the domain in database so you will need to do a few extra steps.

    How different is your production site from your beta site? Do you really need or want to swap the 2 sites?

    Actually, the beta site is a little less “complicated” than our current production site. (a lot less bells and whistles).

    If your beta site and database contains all of your latest files, assets and data then moving the entire site would probably be the easiest way to go.

    Just make sure you follow in the instructions.
