Suggestion: Option to use WordPress user profile picture

  • I came across this plugin while searching for a GDPR-compliant Gravatar alternative, and it’s very close to perfect ??

    However, I would love to have the option to use the locally stored WordPress user profile pictures. This way, I could completely disable Gravatar and still have personalised avatars for the authors – which would make author replies easily recognizable for the readers.

    Any chance this could be implemented in a future update?

    Anyways, thanks a lot for the work you put into this plugin!

    Hello Daniel,

    Which plugin for user profile pictures are you using?

    If it’s custom code, I could add a filter which would fake the gravatar check and allow your code to work.
    If not, I can make my plugin work with specific Profile Picture plugin.

    Hello Sibin,

    I don’t use any profile picture plugin at the moment and just realised that the profile picture that is shown in the user profiles is drawn from Gravatar – sorry about the confusion :-/

    I can see that this functionality would bloat your plugin, as there are so many possible ways to implement locally stored avatars.

    Maybe there is a way to only allow the Gravatar to be pulled for the WP users (= the authors), and deactivate the Gravatar request for unregistered commenters?

    I think this would make it a very interesting plugin GDPR-wise, as I haven’t found a plugin yet that allows you to disable Gravatar, have randomised commenter avatars and personalised author avatars.

    Hello Daniel,

    I’ll see what I can do about the gravatars for logged in users.

    Meanwhile, you can disable the gravatar in the plugin options (for all users).

    I’ll do my best to get out a minor version in the next couple of days (before GDPR comes in full effect).

    P.S. I’ll keep this unresolved until then.

    Thats great Sibin – thanks a lot!

    And I know that I can completely disable Gravatar with your plugin – however, this makes it a lot harder to identify the comments/answers written by the author of a given post (which in my view greatly enhances the “user-friendliness” of a comment section).
