    It’s fine as far as it goes, but it doesn’t go far enough. My suggestions are;

    First, rename it, Books

    Second, expand the heirarchy

Project: what the author is working on
..Volumes: the books he’s working on. This would come with an outline.
….Meta Chapters: A group of chapters
    ……Chapters: As in a book
    ……..Sub-Chapters: Sections of a chapter
    ……….Sections: Part of a sub-chapter
…………And so on and so forth

    The sub-chapters would be each entry as a WP Post or Page. Some chapters would have just one sub-chapter, these including;

    ..Title page
    ..Credit Page
    ..Table of Contents
    ..Preface
    ..Forward
    ..Introduction
    ..Appendix
    ..Glossary
    ..Bibliography
    ..Index

Standard chapters would have a number of sub-chapters, each on a common topic.

Not all chapters and sub-chapters would be necessary

Chapters may have either Roman numbering, or Arabic. But once Arabic numbering is initiated the author may not go back to Roman. Roman being most often used for the table of contents or before.

Further, certain entries would be automatically updated as the author adds to his document. These entries being:

    ..Outline
    ..Table of Contents
    ..Glossary
    ..Index

In addition, the ToC would have the page numbers updated as the entries were updated.

Yes, I am working on a few books, and I thought it would be fun to share my work online. A Books plug in as I laid it out above would be a lot of help.

    Thanks for your time

Well first thanks a lot for the effort! Your contribution is very clear.

Indeed, I wondered for a while if I had to implement the tree-hierarchy you suggested, which led me to some reflection in that direction; I thought not so many people would need something so complex, and that is mainly why I declined, though it is very much doable.

The easiest way of providing that kind of functionnality should be to create a custom taxonomy, that is to say that the user would create is own taxonomy, exactly like he creates the categories and subcategories of posts. Because if I work with your own list of sub-sub-sub aso, it might be wonderful for you, but inaccurate for some other user ??

The custom taxonomy lets you choose your own tree divisions, you see what I mean? I also thought about the point of choosing roman or letters or arabic numbering for each sub, which is more complex than it seems. For example someone might want to organize a toc like this:
    I
    1)
    a)
    b)
    2) aso
    but some others like this:
    I
    I-1
    I-1-a
    I-1-b
    I-2
and how can we be sure to provide enough possibilities for example if the depth reaches more than 10 levels? It requires also some reflexion…

Anyway how could it work properly? Let’s think about it.

For example, the idea would be to organize the levels of depth exactly like it works in the menu page of WordPress admin. And then giving the possibility of numbering each part exactly as one wants would be nice.

This is a very interesting idea for sure; I’d like to keep ‘Chapters’ simple as it is, but after all why not creating another plugin called ‘Books’, very much more specific?… Still I’m afraid the lot of manipulation it requires from the user would not be a good thing.

Please tell me more, give a feedback reply and more details of what you expect ok? We’ll see then.

    Thanks in advance!

The format I’m now using resembles to of an outline/toc. But I’m doing it through a wiki. That’s more what I was thinking of.
