Hello, recently after we did a backup and update and we are now experiencing a “double” meta-description issue which we had not faced previously. The meta-description populating all of our web pages within our site is the same one used on our homepage.

Within the loaded code, I only am able to find the one description but AHrefs has crawled the website multiple times now and pulled up both. We have also done a restore of the backup so we could try to pinpoint the issue and it has not alleviated it. Please help ?? I am at my wit’s end.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

I am having a similar issue. I see two different meta descriptions etc when I check Page Source view for your site. Did you use any kind of header builder?

Hey tyler- can you specify where you are seeing the two, because I have searched for them and only find the one? I looked in the footer which is a custom page and I checked the currently running code snippets. I even checked the theme code/framework.

    view-source:https://greatlakesroofing.com/insulation/

Copy and paste the whole line above into your browser.
If you search that page for “meta” you’ll see them

I should clarify that I am no expert on this. I just saw that you had something similar to what I am experiencing…but I think my issue is related to using a header builder.

I have searched and I do not see them. I see the Yoast meta and OG that are supposed to be there but not the description of “Great Lakes Roofing and Insulation is a full-service commercial roofing contractor and insulation provide, serving Michigan for 30+ years.”, which is apparently on every page.

Are you using a header builder?

We are not, this theme was built by an agency a couple years ago before I came on. There isn’t even an option to customize the header. I was wondering if maybe something is running in Google Tag Manager but I do not see anything. In the screenshot, the source code of the home page has the meta description and the other is the OG description- the OG description is not the same on every page so it cannot be the duplicate. Sigh.

    Hello @meibrownbranches,

Thanks for reaching out about your duplicate meta descriptions. Using this post as an example, I can confirm the meta description tag appears twice in the page source:

<meta name="description" content="Great Lakes Roofing and Insulation is a full-service commercial roofing contractor and insulation provide, serving Michigan for 30+ years." />

<meta name="description" content="Experience warmth and lasting protection with our professional insulation services in Michigan. Great Lakes Roofing ensures weather-resistant roofs, shielding you and your property from the cold in Sault Ste. Marie." />

The first is from the Yoast SEO plugin, but I am uncertain about the origin of the second one. However, a conflict check will help you figure that out. The fastest way to rule out any conflict is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Twenty-Two.

Please test this on your development or staging site if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.

If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts

If you feel uncomfortable doing this yourself or if this does not solve your issue, our Yoast SEO Premium plugin comes with one year of (technical) support.

Can i ask how this was resolved? I am experiencing the same issue on a site. Switching from Hello theme fixed the issue temporarily so im assuming its something wrong with Hello.

    Hey Steve,

It took a lot of time and trial and error but we discovered it was a speed optimization plugin (Airlift) that was cache-ing every page alongside WP cache-ing. So we had to disable it and clear the WP cache. I hope this helps you!
