Suddenly can’t stay logged in

    I’m using a Mac with Safari 3.2.1 or Firefox 3.0.7.

    I’ve had my blog since WordPress 1.5, and never had problems with logins previously.

    Over the weekend, I upgraded php from 4.3 to 5 on my host site. I also did some plugin tweaking, but I don’t think either of those things necessarily did anything to break my site.

    I can log in fine using either of my admin passwords. The whole time I’m on the admin pages I stay logged in. But if I navigate back out to the homepage, I’m no longer logged in.

    As a result, if I schedule a post, and then click “view post” to make sure I didn’t screw up the image url, I can’t see it because we’re not in the scheduled time yet.

    Already tried clearing cookies on both browsers, and resetting both browsers, with no effect. I also replaced my wp-config.php file with the latest wp-config-sample.php file (with all my values, obviously) since I hadn’t added the newer security fields yet. I even tried rerunning “wp-admin/upgrade.php” to see if maybe there was something that had to re-something because I upgraded php last weekend, but it had no effect.

    Is anyone else having trouble staying logged in on their main site?

    One other note – I also have an install to bbpress on this site, and I use wpstats, but I don’t think either of them is corrupting my cookies, because if that was happening I wouldn’t be able to stay logged in on the admin site either.

    One of my registered commenters just posted that he’s having the same problem on Windows/IE 7, so it’s definitely not my machine.

    I don’t know for sure, but I think I had some legacy code somewhere that was screwing things up. After a few hours of looking for some kind of post that told me what was going on, I decided to:

    – Back up my WordPress files
    – Remove my existing WordPress directory
    – Download a fresh copy of WordPress 2.7.1
    – Upload it to my server with only my wp-config file from the old installation
    – Run the “upgrade” code.

    Since then everything’s been fine, even when I re-uploaded my old themes and plugins. So yeah, it must have been the php 4.3 to 5.x upgrade on the server that screwed everything up and I needed to put clean code up to fix it.

    Just thought I’d post my “solution” in case someone else wandered in with the same problem.

    I have also been having this problem and had no idea what to do. Much like yourself, no one replied to my post on the forums. Thanks so much for posting this once you found the answer! You’re awesome!

    @kirabug, Do I understand you to be saying that you replaced absolutely everything except your wp-config.php file and your wp-content/themes and wp-content/plugins directories? What about .htaccess and index.php? Anything else? The reason I ask is I already upgraded to 2.7.1 and the problem persists — but I didn’t follow your instrux. I just don’t want to delete or overwrite something that will break my site’s functionality.
    Alternatively, do you feel upgrading to 2.8 beta 1 might do the trick?
