This plugin has worked great for years, then suddenly I noticed it had disconnected and could not reconnect with Square – on trying, I get an error “whoops, something went wrong” and nothing else.
It works fine on other sites with the same theme & plugins (and at least one connected to the same Square account).

I’ve tried removing the plugin, clearing the db tables and re-installing, same problem.

Up to date versions of WP, WC, theme and all plugins, PHP 8.x, mySQL 10.5.x

  • Hi @captainswallow

    Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that the plugin is not working on your end even after re-installing it and having updated versions of WordPress and WooCommerce.

The best way to determine if the issue is being caused by a theme and/or plugin is to perform a full conflict test:

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

    Before you start

    • First, please make sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. Most hosting companies have this included in the subscription, but you could also consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.
    • Second, I would suggest installing a plugin called Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community and it allows you to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

You can make use of a staging/test site to proceed with the conflict test recommended above.

If your host doesn’t offer that option, we recommend WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site.

Let us know the result of the test.

I tried the troubleshooting with a default theme and only WC and the WC Square plugin active – still a problem.

After a bit more fiddling, I may have resolved it.

    Steps:
    Disabled “Disable Parent Menu Link”
    Was able to enable Square
Re-enabled “Disable Parent Menu Link”, broke some layout settings(?)
On a whim, disabled “ShortPixel Adaptive Images” and everything seems OK again! (odd though, as I use this other places with the same settings and no problems)

At least the main problem is solved!

Can you give any more details on your resolution?

I find a bunch of howtos for “Disable Parent Menu Link”, but that doesn’t appear to be an option anywhere, it’s a pattern used for creating menus? Either way, everything I found about that seems to be talking about page settings.

Can you explain exactly what you did?

I don’t have the “ShortPixel Adaptive Images” plugin.

    Hi @nhtshot

From what @captainswallow has described it sounds like it was indeed an issue with the ShortPixel plugin and if you’re not using this you are likely seeing something different on your site. Per the forums guidelines if you can please open up your own thread we’ll be more than happy to help you look into this.

    Thanks!
