• My site has suddenly gone completely blank.

This weekend I made some changes to files on my server but did not touch the wordpress folder at all. That’s the only thing I did, so I’m rather surprised that my wordpress site is now not working – totally blank screen for the site and for the admin area.

I decided to reinstall, but of course wordpress decides that I’ve already installed and that an upgrade isn’t necessary.

Wondering what the best approach is to resolving this – has anyone else come across a similar problem?

  • kersti,

When uou say you made changes on server files…

    1) What files are we talking about?

    2) Are you able to rollback these changes?

WordPress install is within a subdirectory. In root is another site. I updated a few files in root but didn’t touch the wordpress subdir at all.

    Kersti,

Have you got a copy of .htaccess before and after the changes you mention? If yes… then compare and see if any entries are likely to impact the WP install in subdirectory.

I don’t have that – will see if I can get hold of it

OK, just confirmed that .htaccess is the same for this site and for another site running on the same physical server that is also wordpress

Is it worth trying to reinstall? How would I do that?

An update – I’ve just reinstalled, removed the old site, dropped the tables then installed – all looked good so added in my theme. All looked good again so imported my data. Bang, all is a blank screen again.

    kersti,

Using phpmyadmin – check the following in the options table:

    – siteurl
    – home

    ensure they are correct.

Also you might like to disable all plugins.

If the blank screen thing is happening after importing old data – then more than likely the issue is being caused by the options table. Repeat the re-install but omit the options table when restoring db.

I’ve checked the options table and yes they were correct, it was a plugin that was causing the problem – thank-you so much for the response.
