Such thing as too many plugins?

  • In case anyone thinks this is funny I am serious. I am putting together this blog and as of this am, I found That I have 11 active plugins. Is there a point where it’s too many? I am thinking too heat on my server, etc?

    Also, I would have to assume it may also depend on WHICH plugins I am using?

    If there is no “official” answer, advice would do just fine as I am a noob ??

  • In theory you should be able to use unlimited plugins. In reality it will depend on your hosting situation (e.g. how much memory you can allocate to PHP), what the plugins do, and if the plugins are well coded.

    11 plugins should not present a problem, but one wrongly coded plugin could bring a server to its knees.

    Adding to the debate – I am already nearing 20, and I can vouch for each one of them – :/ needed them all, and so theyre there.

    WHen can I like stop ??

    Should I delete the inactie plugins – do they use any kind of computational resources?

    PS – Wibiya bar has a site tracker that I use – showing no of current online viewers, based on the replies here, shall I remove it to load my site quicker?

    They take up space, but they don’t use CPU, RAM, or bandwidth.

    Any plugin you deactivate will make your site load quicker, even if only by a few milliseconds. If you don’t need it, deactivate it.

    Basically Im working on something similar to Yahoo Answers with ecommerce, having a payment option for good answers, downloading of thousands of tutorial files -pdf/doc/ppts etc and possibly many many thousands of posts – and users, hopefully and ideally.The shear functionalities I need oblige me to include very many plugins.

    I know its not related, but would WordPress CMS be able to handle a hypothetical portal like Y! Answers?

    I know of and have worked on several. In the end, the total number really doesn’t matter. What matters is how resource-instensive each plugin is, your hosting plan, and how much of the server’s resources are available to you.

    WordPress can handle just about anything you throw at it, as long as you have the server resources to back it up.
