Subscriptions
-
Hello,
I’m setting up woocommerce for subscriptions.
The current site is located in the United States, but subscriptions will need to be available for purchase worldwide.
I have some questions:1 – The theme already foresees the possibility of selling by subscription and we would like to do it using your “WooCommerce Payments”. To sell subscriptions you need your subscription plugin,
this to make payments become recurring? I hope not.
2 – With your plugin, are the subscriptions sold with any payment gateway that the customer chooses at checkout? such as ApplePay, AmazonPay, credit / debit cards etc.
3 – In the case of Paypal, do you still need to create a paypal Business account?Thank you

Hi @woodypad ,
Thanks for reaching out!
1 – The theme already foresees the possibility of selling by subscription and we would like to do it using your “WooCommerce Payments”. To sell subscriptions you need your subscription plugin, this to make payments become recurring? I hope not.
WooCommerce Payments does have built-in subscription feature, please see the documentation below for more information pertaining to this:
https://woocommerce.com/document/payments/subscriptions/
2 – With your plugin, are the subscriptions sold with any payment gateway that the customer chooses at checkout? such as ApplePay, AmazonPay, credit / debit cards etc.
Correct, those options will be available as payment methods to the customer once the payment setup has been completed and is active on the site. More information regarding this can be found below, you can navigate to “What are the benefits for me?” in the below document:
https://woocommerce.com/products/woocommerce-payments
3 – In the case of Paypal, do you still need to create a paypal Business account?
WooCommerce Paypal Payments can be used with both personal, or business PayPal accounts.
Hope this helps!
Hello,
I think Roxanne already clarified the questions. But regarding this part:
The current site is located in the United States, but subscriptions will need to be available for purchase worldwide.
That sounds like you would like to offer the product/service in multiple countries, you can consider setting up a multi-currency model:
https://woocommerce.com/document/payments/currencies/multi-currency-setup/That way you will be able to accept payments in these currencies:
https://woocommerce.com/document/payments/faq/available-currencies/I hope this helps.
Hi @roxannestoltz, @ihereira
thanks for your answer.I still need some clarification.
1 – The current business and site I am enabling for subscriptions is located in the united states, but I don’t understand if WooCommerce Payments can be used, the plugin guide doesn’t seem clear to me it says like this:
“Be based in the United States. Not yet available for territories of the US.”
So I don’t understand if it can be used or not.
But it is also not clear if it can be used in other countries such as Europe and if there are constraints for some states.2 – Ok, if I understand correctly, by activating all the desired payment methods on the site, users can choose their favorite and subscribe. So there is no subscription constraint on specific payment methods.
3 – Ok then WooCommerce Paypal Payments, allows you to start a subscription with paypal without activating Paypal business.
4 – For WooCommerce Payments subscriptions it has additional fees, or requires only transaction fees.
Thank you

But it is also not clear if it can be used in other countries such as Europe and if there are constraints for some states. You can use the subscription feature as long as your store is based in the US states. However, if you are based in the US territories such as Puerto Rico, virgin islands etc…the subscription feature can not be used.
2 – Ok, if I understand correctly, by activating all the desired payment methods on the site, users can choose their favorite and subscribe. So there is no subscription constraint on specific payment methods.
When a customer has a subscription product in the cart, only WooCommerce Payments will become available at checkout.
3 – Ok then WooCommerce Paypal Payments, allows you to start a subscription with paypal without activating Paypal business.
You can have multiple payment methods active on your site, but as mentioned above, all other payments including PayPal will be hidden when a customer tries to check out a cart that contains any subscription product.
4 – For WooCommerce Payments subscriptions it has additional fees, or requires only transaction fees.
Please refer to this section for more information: https://woocommerce.com/document/payments/subscriptions-with-woocommerce-payments/#subscription-fees
I hope it clarifies.
Hello,
Thank you for your answer!1 – Ok
So it is usable only in the united states.
But why is it not possible to use it for example in Europe, Italy, France, etc.?2/3 – When a user has a subscription product they will have WooCommerce Payments as a payment method, this is clear to me. But with WooCommerce Payments, if I understand correctly, I can activate various payment gateways, Credit Cards, ApplePay, Paypal etc. Then they will all be available to the user who purchases a subscription. Correct?
Thank you
Hi @woodypad! How’s it going today?
Just to clarify it a bit, the WooCommerce payments plugin is available in 18 countries and supports more than 100 different currencies.
A few built-in functionalities like Subscriptions, instant deposits, and in-person payment are available only for merchants in the United States.
In support of creating a global commerce platform, we are actively working to make WooCommerce Payments available to other countries.
If you want to use WooCommerce Payments and it’s not available in your country, please vote for your country to be supported on the WooCommerce Ideas board.
If you’re not a merchant from the United States and want to use a subscription functionality, you can consider using a plugin/extension like this one with your WooCommerce store:
https://woocommerce.com/products/woocommerce-subscriptions/
Let us know if you have any doubts about it, and we’ll be happy to help!
My very best,
Hi @chiape!
Sorry you confuse me,
It has been said before that WooCommerce Payments already includes a subscription system. Why should I install that expensive plugin now?It all seemed clear to me, only two aspects still weren’t:
1 – I wanted to understand why the subscription was not available in other countries, but only in the United States. This is simply because we build sites not only for the United States.
2 – It seems that with WooCommerce Payments you can activate various payment gateways, I just wanted to understand if they are always available to pay for the subscriptions. Or it is bound to a single payment method.
Thank you
Hello @woodypad!
Thanks for the reply!
It has been said before that WooCommerce Payments already includes a subscription system. Why should I install that expensive plugin now?
This was recommended as an alternative due to the eligibility requirements set for Subscriptions with WooCommerce Payments here: https://woocommerce.com/document/payments/subscriptions/#section-1
1 – I wanted to understand why the subscription was not available in other countries, but only in the United States. This is simply because we build sites not only for the United States.
Please note that your store, while based in the US, can sell subscriptions to customers in other countries in over 100 different currencies
- More on that here: https://woocommerce.com/document/payments/faq/available-currencies
2 – It seems that with WooCommerce Payments you can activate various payment gateways, I just wanted to understand if they are always available to pay for the subscriptions. Or it is bound to a single payment method.
As the subscription functionality in WooCommerce Payments is in its preview stage, it will be available for debit and credit card payments. Support for additional countries and payment methods will be available in the coming months.
Hope this helps clarify things!
