Subscription widget confirmation message not overwriting optional text

When I put an email address in the Subscription widget and hit the Subscribe button it displays a confirmation message but it does not clear the original optional text message that was there before clicking the button, it instead displays right above it. Is this a bug or by design? It shows this in the widget, shouldn’t it clear the enter email address message and replace it with the confirmation message

An email was just sent to confirm your subscription. Please find the email now and click activate to start subscribing.
Enter your email address to subscribe and receive notifications of new posts by email.
