Why did my Jetpack subscribers suddenly switch from WordPress.com followers to email only?

There are two ways to follow a WordPress blog using Jetpack: (1) WordPress.com followers and (2) Email Only Followers.

Up until Friday, October 20th, 2023 my blog was consistently signing up over 100 subscribers a week through email only and less than 10 per week on WordPress.com. This had been happening consistently for 1 year.

Then on Saturday, October 21, 2023 something happened. I signed up less than 10 subscribers though email only and over 160 through WordPress.com.

What could account for this sudden change in new subscriber behavior? Did Jetpack change in some way that would make this happen?

    Hi @mdevaney87,

Yes, now when a reader confirms their email subscription to your blog, they’ll now also have a WordPress.com account set up automatically. This added step equips your subscribers with a streamlined dashboard to manage their preferences, offering a more personalized experience. They can now engage more deeply with your content and be part of the broader WordPress.com community.

Rest assured, the way users subscribe via email remains unchanged, and they will continue to get email alerts for new posts. Additionally, with their new WordPress.com accounts, they have enhanced control over their subscription settings, which they can fine-tune at any time, as detailed here:

I hope this help, but if anything isn’t working as expected for you, or if you need further clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out.

    Best regards!

    Alin,

Can I go back to the previous way of doing things and have subscribers default to email only?

I am losing subscribers daily because of this change. My subscriber counts are actually going down now. Before the new WordPress.com sign ups I was averaging 100 new subscribers a week for the past year.

The success of my blog had me looking at Jetpack CRM. But right now my subscriber counts are going down and I can’t help but feel it is Jetpack’s fault.

Please tell me how to reverse the changes Jetpack has made.

    Hi @mdevaney87,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I’d like to reassure you that from the user’s perspective, the process of subscribing to your site remains unchanged. They enter their email, receive a confirmation email, and upon confirmation, they’re subscribed just as before. The creation of a WordPress.com account is a background process that doesn’t alter their experience of subscribing or receiving email notifications from your site.

Considering this new process, do you think this could be influencing the decrease in email-only subscriptions on your site? We’re committed to understanding our users’ needs and refining our services accordingly. If there’s an aspect of this update that’s impacting your subscriber growth, we’re eager to hear about it and explore potential adjustments. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Yes, ever since the change my subscribers have been declining daily. Not growing.

Hello there – I checked the subscriber stats for your site here: https://wordpress.com/stats/subscribers/week/example.com [replace “example.com” with your site address], and currently, the graph is going up – may I know if CRM is showing the email subscribers/followers?

Because to get accurate result about your email subscribers/followers growth, you can check the above link.

    Animesh,

The subscriptions have now reverted back to their original state where email only is the dominant method and WordPress.com is less popular. Only explanation I can offer is that the Jetpack team made patch and fixed what was broken in another release. Everything seems OK now.
