• HI

I’m running a website on VPS Centos 6. I want to add a store to my website and I would like to know if it is better to use a subdomain for an online store or just a folder? eg. store.domain.com or https://www.domain.com/store

My VPS sometimes struggles with loads and excessive processes already, so I would like to know what is best practice.

    Many thanks

    Clare

  • I can’t say with 100% certainty, but I’d guess that a sub-folder is more likely to require fewer resources. I say that because a sub-domain is likely to be a treated as a separate site by the service with it’s own memory footprint and other server resources. Whereas a sub-folder would share the resources for the parent folder particularly if the same technology is used to power all parts.

A sub-domain has advantages though as it would be much easier to move the sub-domain elsewhere or under a different account should you need to scale up the resources allocated to it.

Thanks Marios, I will go with subfolder – seems logical. Then when my shop is earning megabucks I can pay someone else to worry about moving it to another server ??

In all truth, it makes no difference. Depends on your setup, of course, but realistically the same server instances are used for both.
