• I set up WordPress on my website, allisonnance.com, and enabled multisite. I then set up a subdomain on Godaddy, mikejinksserviceco.allisonnance.com and created an A name record pointing it toward my IP. Then, I added the site to wordpress. When I go to the dashboard for the subdomain site, I get a “not found” message. If I put the subdomain in my browser I get a “forbidden” message.

I contacted GoDaddy first because I thought since this was my first time setting all this up, I had something with the subdomain wrong. They said everything was pointed in the correct direction but the subdomain folder was empty. I installed WP in the root domain. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?

I did edit my htaccess file to take visitors to index.html since I’m not using this for my personal site. Could that be causing this?

  • Hi Allison

I do not think you need a multi-site for this purpose as you are likely creating a client live testing WordPress site. ??

You will need to install WordPress (new db recommended) in the subdomain’s folder (which can be seen in the public_html folder). It is always a good idea to keep these testing sites as separate entities to reduce the risk of db corruption. You will be able to easily export sql and source code when the site is production ready.

    All the best.

2 options, the easiest is to use multisite in folder mode which allows for a single ssl and quick easy setup.

The other option if you want to use subdomains is to login to GD and change the folder that the subdomain points to and use the same folder as your multisite install. I used this option when I was on GD.
