subdomain multisite on LunarPages

    I’ve got a subdomain-type multisite install working on my primary domain (mindfulmammoth.com), which is hosted by LunarPages. Now, I’m having trouble adding child/subdomain sites. I can’t tell if this is a WordPress configuration problem, or a cPanel/LunarPages problem.

    Some details:

    Using my cPanel, I told LunarPages to create a subdomain called fireandflora.mindfulmammoth.com. Then, using the WordPress site admin, I created a new site at fireandflora.mindfulmammoth.com. When I try to visit the site dashboard, I’m taken to https://fireandflora.mindfulmammoth.com/wp-admin/
    where I get the message

    Not Found

The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server.

    I navigated to fireandflora.mindfulmammoth.org, and got an Apache server test page.

    So I went and looked at the filesystem. It seems that, when I used cPanel to create the subdomain, it also created a folder called fireandflora under my public_html folder. I looked in this folder, and found that it was essentially empty, containing a single folder (cgi-bin), but that cgi folder was empty.

    As an experiment, I added an index.html file to the fireandflora subfolder. The html file just says “Hello World”. Now, when I navigate to fireandflora.mindfulmammoth.com, I get “Hello World”. But hello world is not WordPress.

    I feel like there’s some miscommunication between WordPress and LunarPages. Where the default LunarPages subdomain behavior is not what WordPress is expecting, so that when WordPress tries to send me to a control panel, or to visit the new site, the LunarPages nameservers redirect me to some alternate place. But I don’t know what to do about it.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    fireandflora.mindfulmammoth.com is showing hello world.

    Is it pointing to where mindfulmammoth.com is insytalled, or it’s own folder?

    It’s pointing to it’s own folder.

    LunarPages doesn’t do wildcard subdomains, but it will let you specify particular subdomains, one by one. Since I only want a few, specific, subdomains, I thought this would be fine. Apparently, it’s not. Or at least, not yet.

    When you tell LunarPages you want a subdomain, they create a subfolder within public_html. Then, when you type in the address, LunarPages directs you to the contents of that subfolder.

    I placed the “Hello World” file in the “fireandflora” subfolder. So the “Hello World” is proof that the subdomain exists, but it’s also proof that there’s a problem. LunarPages handling of the subdomain is not what WordPress expects, and I don’t know how to get the two to work together.

    Sight. so … remember how I told you over and over you have to have your subdomains point to where mindfulmammoth.com is installed? That’s what I mean ??

    According to Google, LunarPages uses cPanel: https://wiki.lunarpages.com/Subdomains_in_cPanel

    You can change where the subdomain points by changing /public_html/fireandflora to /public_html

    That’s all you have to do ??

    You did tell me many things, but it’s taken a while to absorb. I was coming from a point of vast ignorance, and while I thought I understood what was going on, I didn’t. I’m sorry about that, but I appreciate your persistance.

    Unfortunately, that wiki page lies. I don’t have all of those options. My subdomain cPanel looks like this (jpg):

    So I can add subdomains, and delete subdomains, but nothing more. I’ve put in a support request to LunarPages to get this improved. They’ve asked for 24 hours. And I admit they’ve been pretty friendly with my other requests this past week. So I’ll give them the 24 hours, then consider migrating elsewhere, as I’ve got a deadline coming. If this doesn’t work out, maybe I’ll move to DreamHost …

    The control panel that you are using for your hosting plan is not cPanel, this is why you’re unable to follow the steps suggested by Ipstenu. The control panel that you are using – LPCP – or LunarPages Control Panel, doesn’t allow you to point a sub-domain to the public_html directory (the directory root is ../public_html/[name].

    The solution for this is actually easy. Let’s assume that you have a WMS (WordPress Multi Site) instance that is running under https://www.lpwebhosting.com , where this domain is actually the primary domain of your account.

    In order to force a sub-domain to be pointed to the public_htmk directory, you can simply create the sub-domain as a parked domain. So let’s assume that you are looking to have a WMS instance under https://blog.lpwebhosting.com . For this, simply add the sub-domain as a parked domain for your account. This will result in having both the main domain (https://www.lpwebhosting.com) and the sub-domain (https://www.blog.lpwebhosting.com) pointed to the same directory root (../public_html).

    Hoo ha! That’s it!

    I want to offer very mild criticism of LunarPages, as that cPanel documentation is a little misleading. But in the end, it all seems to work. So I need to apologize a bit. I’ve been grumpy, cause I feel serious time pressure, but both LunarPages and the folks here have been patient and helpful. I think it’s now all setup, and ready for me to start on the content.
