• Hi all,

    I’m new to the community.
I am managing a site created with wordpress for work. I inherited it in its current form and have to figure out how to manage it.

I do have an offline dev environment as a clone of the live site, but I’d like to have an online dev site through a subdomain so I wouldn’t have to be on the one machine to make edits.
I’d like to have a fresh install of WordPress altogether because the site I’m working with has a lot of customization and I want to be able to change lots of things without upsetting any of the pieces I don’t understand yet on the live site.

I made a subdomain, dev.xxxxx.org and pointed it to a sub directory _dev in my root folder.
If I install wordpress inside that _dev folder, will that be totally isolated from the instance of wordpress that is installed on the root?
If this was for a personal site I’d just try it and see, but since this is a work site I REALLY don’t want to break it.

My plan is to use the WP clone tool (which I’ve had good luck with so far) to just clone and replace the live site when I’m satisfied with the changes I want to make on the dev site. (It’ll be a lot of changes.)

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • yes it should work fine

you want to make a new database, user and password for that subdomain install

place all of your files in that directory

As long as you’re using a different database (i.e. the dev database should be a different then the live site’s) you should be fine. So make sure when cloning the site to change the database to point to the dev database.
