Subdirectory Problems

    I just created a multisite installation that I would like to eventually use as a development server. I’ve never used MU before, but I figured I could handle it. However, as stupid as this sounds, what do I need to place in the subdirectories of my sites? Nothing, everything (in wordpress installation)?

    If I have an empty folder it looks like just that – an empty directory, not a site – when I go to view the new site, but I can still access the back-end (because this is run through the main MU installation). However, if I place all the files in a typical wordpress installation into the subdirectory, then it starts asking me to configure/install it – which should have already been done through the multisite admin screen, right?

    This seems like it should be basic part of the MU installation, but no walkthrough or forum covers what you do with the subdirectories in terms of files. This leads me to believe that they should be empty and I have a server-side/MU-installation issue OR that they need to have all the files and I’m not setting it up right.

  • My understanding is that you do not have to do anything to the actual sub directories. When you create a new site/blog in the network area it will create the subfolders necessary to run that blog.

    got it. silly mistake – you cannot have an actual subdirectory with the same name as a site – the server will revert you to the physical directory instead of the wordpress run site.

    Yep, it will. All blogs are virtual, no matter the format.

    FYI, that’s true of all things WordPress (or Drupal or anything). If you made a folder /about/ it would overrule the page about ??

    Right, right. Totally aware of it, just forgot that I had a folder with the same name in there from before! Thanks for the help!
