My site hasn’t gone live yet so I can’t provide a link, but here’s the issue:

I want my url to show categories, subcategories, and the post name. For example:

    example.com/colleges/alaska/best-engineering-programs

However, even when I select all the categories (“colleges” and its subcategory “Alaska”), the url only shows the main category:

    URL showing: example.com/colleges/best-engineering-programs

Under Settings -> Permalinks on the WP admin page I have set “/%category%/%postname%/” which is supposed to show both categories and subcategories, but all of my blog posts are only showing the main categories.

I believe this is caused by Yoast based on this post on the Generate Press forums.

It seems like she figured it out, but I’m still stuck. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi @jbm24 ,

Can you please confirm if you are experiencing this on Yoast SEO 14.7? Also, have you tried resetting the Permalinks in Settings > Permalinks > Save Changes (without changing anything)?

    Looking forward to your response.

Thanks for the quick response @jerparx. I checked and I am in Yoast SEO 14.7.

I did solve the issue, but I still have no idea about the root cause. I had selected both a parent category (colleges) + one of its subcategories (Alaska).

To get both of these in the URL, I had to deselect the parent category (selecting only the subcategory) and publish. This changed the URL successfully.

Then I could re-check the parent category, update, and it still showed the full permalink URL with colleges/alaska/postname.

So now I’m confused and unsure if this was related to Yoast at all. I appreciate your response and time ??

@jbm24 hey, just ran into the same issue, do not have Yoast installed. Only ACFPro at the moment which should not be an issue. What the heck ? :O

    Am having the same issue,
I have added games as primary category and action as subcategory.
I also set permalink to custom “/%category%/%postname%/”
MY Post URL only showing Main Category.
    My URL: https://steamgameupdates.com/games/vreal-steam-pc-game-download/
    Any suggestions?

    Hi, i Got the solution,
I updated the Yoast plugin Then i select only secondary category in post.
Now, I got the complete URL.

Also I checked by selecting both category, I got 2 Live URLs for one page, one URL must supposed to shows as 404! But its not.

So Am fixed by selecting secondary sub-category. Now wrong URL is automatically forwarded to correct URL.
I didn’t used any redirection before, but i planned to put 301 redirect manually for safety precaution.

    Check my Both URLs:
    https://steamgameupdates.com/games/vreal-steam-pc-game-download/
    https://steamgameupdates.com/games/action/vreal-steam-pc-game-download/
