    Hello,
I have a shop of graphic designs. I have a main parent category called “printables” and several subcategories of items (ex, Fall, Quotes, Scripture, etc.) to keep each of the different product types separated.

When I go to appearance> customize> woocommerce> product catalog I have “Shop page display” set to “show categories” and I have “Category display” set to “show subcategories.” However, when you click onto the main parent category it just displays all of the products. No matter what I set these settings to I can’t get that page to display the subcategories.

    Some things I have tried:
    1. Only making items assigned to subcategories and not the parent category but that would only display the products and no category info whatsoever.
    2. Assigning some products to both a subcategory and the parent category but that would only display the products assigned to the parent and not the ones that were only assigned to a subcateogry.
    3. Adjusting the “display type” within the category editor but none of those options seemed to effect the display.

    Wordpress 4.9.8
    Olsen Light Theme
    WooCommerce version 3.4.5

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

No, I don’t want to be able to see products until you click on a subcategory. So I have them set like this: https://imgur.com/a/r4NjNp2

But the ‘category display’ of ‘show subcategories’ does not work. If I click on the parent category right now it just displays all of my products regardless of subcategory.

Essentially I want it displayed like:
    Shop> Categories> Subcategories> Products

It’s a better user experience if you create less steps. Wouldn’t it be easier if you just showed sub categories and or categories however and put your others in a sidebar filter position. That way users are not going thru 4 steps to get to a product. Your dropoff would be really high.

You may have to take a look at the structure of your categories too. Like we use
    Skincare (parent)
    – face (child)
    – eyes
    – hair

    Makeup (parent)
    – face
    – eyes
    – lips

We display only the parent and then we filter the children into a sidebar for better user experience.

I am totally fine with that. I intend to have a variety of graphic design products (printables, custom blog graphics, business branding, etc.) so each one of those was going to be a category.

I just don’t want all of my printable products to be thrown on the page without order. I don’t know what the point of having the subcategory is if it refuses to display it?

Can the sidebar that you are suggesting display only when in the shop? I wouldn’t want that info to display if you were just reading the blog.

Yes, you can customize to add a separate sidebar. Your theme may even be able to create a new sidebar and there are some plugins too that can create cuisine sidebars only for shop.

Adding a new sidebar is very easy to do as well in functions. I’d paste script here but I’m driving now.

Oh my!! So naughty! No forum-ing and driving mister.

I am thinking the sidebar thing that you are talking about is a widget I need to add. I will browse around and try to figure that out but if you have guidance send it my way (when you are not on the road).

Lol no no. Is not a widget. You would use a custom menu and select the sub cats you want

Ah I see what you are saying, you’re so patient.

I created the menu and I added the subcategories from Woo. However, my only options are to put the menu across the top (like the main menu of the whole site) or as a footer menu. Maybe my theme doesn’t allow the sidebar option like you described?

You can do it. I’ll show you. 30 mins time.

Hey there! Any update on how to get the sidebar to appear?
