Specifically, what background color do you want for the sub menu?

I have created a CSS code for you to try it out

.main-navigation .menu-item-has-children:hover .sub-menu a {
     background: white;
     color: #6a6a6a;
     border-radius: 3px;
     box-shadow: 0 1px 4px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2);
}
.sub-menu a:hover {
     background: #6a6a6a !important;
     color: #fff !important;
}

• Copy the CSS code
• Go to Appearance > Customize.
• Pasted the code under Additional CSS option.

Just changed the value of “background” to the color based on your preferences.
