• Multi-side appears to be configured properly, but I’m stuck on one concept.

The root /public_html/ pulls up the main WP site. We’ll call it mydomain.com

    I’m attempting to make site1.mydomain.com. Using Network>Admin>Sites I created site1.mydomain.com.

Other than the MySQL tables being updated with the correct prefix, no folders are created, no site appears to be created, and accessing the dashboard link for the new site yields “this site can’t be reached” in Chrome.

    Other steps I’ve taken:

In WHM, I added a CNAME zone for “site1” pointing to mydomain.com.

    That didn’t work.

I’m stuck. Can’t make heads or tails of any of this any more.

Yep. That part is normal expected behavior.

As a part of the network setup, you should have enabled wildcard subdomains. If you did this, you do NOT need to create the subdomain in your hosting. Multisite will do this for you using the wildcard domain. Remove the CNAME for your subsite.

You might want to double-check that you followed all the network setup steps. It gets complicated, and it’s easy to overlook soemthing:

You ARE able to access the front of main site, right? If so, then your problem may be that wildcard domains are not working right in your hosting. Contact your host about this.
