• Apologies if this is a stupid question, but because I haven’t actually installed it yet I can’t “see” the answer and knowing the answer will help me decide between 2 hosts ?? (one offers wildcard subdomains and the other doesn’t so means more of a manual setup)

When you create a site through multi-site using subdomains does it actually create a subdomain or is it just a sort of virtual subdomain? what I mean is I know you will access the site at subdomain.mydomain.com but in my cPanel will I actually see that subdomain listed ? reason for asking is that I want to be able to install separate files under that subdomain for each site. So do I have to create the subomain manually in Cpanel after creating the site if I want to add other files?

    tks

just found the answer in the welcome message ?? they are virtual sub domains so if I’m reading that right I will need to manually create them in CPanel as well if I want to install other files such as other scripts etc.. on that subdomain

You would need to create the subdomains manually and point them to the public_html folder, or use wildcard subdomains to redirect any and all.

tks if I point them to the public html folder how do I add files just for that subdomain? does that not mean that all files will be in the main public html folder? for example if I wanted to add a script for one of the subdomains?

Depending on those other scripts, there may be workarounds.

You cannot make physical folders for the subdomains and still use multisite. Doesn’t work that way.

Thanks Andrea, ok that kinda messes up what I had in mind to do LOL.. I would basically need to be able to install a script (which works off a mysql database) for each of the subdomains, (but in a separate folder) so subdomain.mydomain/folder with the script in /folder. Are there any workarounds for this do you think?

    It depends on the script.

If you install it off the main domain, usually all subdomains then have access to it, due to the rewrite rules. And they’d all work off one copy.

tks, but I really needed each of the subdomains to have their own copy of the script.. but look I can work around it I suppose by creating folders.. mydomain.com/subdomainname and put it in there ! the main thing is each subdomain owner needs a copy of it.

Creating mydomain.com/subdomainname will cause problems with WordPress.

You could put it in their blogs.dir folder perhaps?

Why would that cause probs with wordpress? It’s just a folder off the root? Is it just because of the name or are you saying any extra folders now will cause probs?

Oh wait, you’re using subDOMAINS! Dork = me!

Should be okay. If it was subfolders, then they’d conflict ?? Obviously!

Thanks, thought I was missing something obvious ! ??
