• I manage to run wordpress within a sub-folder of my site without any problem, but was interested in running in as a sub-domain of my site ie blog.domain.com, rather than – domain.com/blog

Thr install works fine, and the basic wordpress functions, however if i upload my chosen theme and choose it in the admin>presentation the site effectively stops working. i just see a white screen, also at same time the site itself goes blank. if i then delete the theme from the themes folder, it works again.

only other clue is if i change the permalink structure for domain.com/blog it accepts it, if i do same for sub-domain it seems to accept it but i see a message asking me to change the .htaccess file.

should it be possible to get wordpress working in a sub-domain? also is it worth me bothering with? from SEO point of view are both sub-domain and sub-folder more or less of the same benefit?

  • i have a wordpress install in a subdomain of another wordpress install.

I cant say exactly how the server has to be set up for it to work properly — I do know that if you use cpanel, the proper way to do it there is to create the subdomain in there — point it to the folder, do NOT choose the redirection option.

Once you have uploaded wordpress to that directory, you use the actual subdomain as the blog url/site url (in other words, dont use https://www.domain.com/subdir)

Ive done this forever without any issues, so yes it is possible. As for SEO, the 2 examples you provided are not the same. Google, for instance, treats subdomains as separate entities.

ok i dont understand how the sub-domain does work for wordpress’ out the box’ but stops once a theme or plugins are uploaded and activated…

well i dont understand your question, other than to say it doesnt ‘just’ stop working – like I said Ive always had a 2nd wordpress installed into a subdomain. I change themes and use plugins.

lots of us have 2nd installs ??

perhaps if you explain your setup more specifically, your problem can be narrowed down.
